England fell in love with the Galway Goals again as Harry Kane scored twice in the second-half to see off DR Congo 2-1 in the World Cup and Irish football writer Miguel Delaney believes the man with the Connemara links rescued Thomas Tuchel and his side.
Delaney writes in the Irish Independent: “Harry Kane scores one of the great England goals to set up a grand World Cup occasion at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium, but only after a general performance entirely unworthy of such descriptions.
”Thomas Tuchel’s side got away with one against a defiant and spirited Democratic Republic of Congo, but only after Kane let fly to remind everyone exactly why this entire team is built around him.”

Derry City have added extra spice to Friday night’s visit of Waterford to the Brandywell with a record League of Ireland transfer bid for striker Tommy Lonergan according to the Irish Examiner.
Adrian Flanagan and John Fallon are reporting that Waterford have rejected a domestic record €180,000 bid from Derry the in-form Irish Under 21 international. Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians have also been linked with moves for Lonergan who has 10 goals to his name already this season.

Galway county footballer Connor Gleeson has switched codes and signed as Galway United’s goalkeeper on a short term contract following the recall of on-loan stopper Evan Watts by his parent club Swansea City.
Gleeson previously played for United in 2018 and goes straight into the squad for Friday’s trip to St Patrick’s Athletic. RTE reports that manager John Caulfield has also signed defender Leigh Kavanagh from Bohs on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Spurs have smashed their transfer record to sign Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for an initial £92.5m for the Newcastle midfielder, with an additional £7.5m in proposed add-ons for the 26-year-old.
TalkSPORT is reporting that Tonali has agreed to the move and will likely be joined in North London by West Ham star Mateus Fernandes for £85m.
